We all get swamped with all the overwhelm of information that comes at us from day to day.
With Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, blogs, news feeds, YouTube videos, new training curses, seminars, webinars, and about 1000 more things it’s hard to keep up worth actually getting anything done.
A few years back I was listening to one of my favorite Podcasts, Internet Business Mastery with Jason & Jeremy, and they talked about something that has stuck with me ever since.
(Sidebar: Here’s a great pic of me with the IBM meetup group in Portland. Tons of fun!)
JIT = Just In Time Learning.
Ask yourself “what do I need right now?”
That single simple question can make all the difference to your success in business and in life. You see, with all the information being thrown at us all the time we think we need to know it all. And much of it might actually be important but do you really need to know it right now?
That’s the power of this question. Is it something that you need to learn at this time in your business or your life.
From a business standpoint I like to look at it from a simplistic point of view. Why would you spend a lot of time, energy and money learning how to get visitors to your website when you don’t have a website up yet?
(Another lesson I learned from Internet Marketer Armand Moran)
We seem to think that we need to know it all. It’s like and addiction. Now I’m an addict just as much as anyone else so I’m not pointing fingers. In fact, I love studying and learning new stuff all the time. It’s a bit of a hobby for me. But, I’ve found that in the past few years,I’ve suffered from the same thing so many other people do. Last of implementation. I’m so busy learning new things that I don’t spend enough time actually implementing them to make them actually work.
I see it all the time with people I coach as well. (Glad to know I’m not alone here). So many people are working on the next big thing instead of actually building a system around that one thing they learned last week.
The phrase “Knowledge Is Power” is what so many of us grew up hearing. Learn more and you’ll succeed in life. Well, that’s only partially true.
Applied Knowledge Is Power!
That’s what makes all that great info important. It doesn’t do you any good to learn the latest and greatest in your industry and never actually use it. Even in your personal life. Maybe you read a book on how to have a better relationship with your kids. Just knowing doesn’t cut it. You have to DO it as well.
It’s the taking action part that shows you really know it. Once you take action and KEEP taking action, you’ll see the results of all that great knowledge you’ve absorbed.
So I’d like to ask you right now… What do you need to know right now? What’s the single most important thing for you to grow and succeed?
Write it down and learn it inside and out. Then… Go do it! Don’t stop and think about it. Don’t move to something else new and shiny. Just take that one single thing and do everything you can with it. Get it working for you.
Once you see the results and you know you’ve done all you can with that one thing, then you can start to think about the next step.
In the mean time, ignore the rest of the latest and greatest shiny objects out there. Don’t even look at them.
It will help you raise your productivity, lower your stress and give you much greater results!
